Our vision for a predator-free Kaipara
At the heart of the Poipoia Te Kākano project is a bold vision: to rid 105,000 hectares across five stunning peninsulas—Hukatere, Okahukura, Puketotara, Pouto (North Head), and Te Korowai o Tonga (South Head)—of invasive pests like possums, stoats, rats, and pigs.
But we’re not stopping there. Our ambitious plan is to extend this vital work across an additional 543,000 hectares in the broader Kaipara catchment, creating a thriving, predator-free haven for native wildlife.

Building a healthier Kaipara together
Poipoia te Kākano is focused on restoring the mauri (life force) of the Kaipara catchment. This initiative brings together marae, local and central government, landowners, and the community to breathe new life into the region’s ecosystems.

Our vision: driving the Kaipara Project forward
Poipoia te Kākano is a pou of Environs the taiao division of Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust and supported by Auckland Council, Northland Regional Council, Department of Conservation and Predator 2050. Poipoia te Kākano benefits from strong partnerships with local iwi and community groups. Our vision is to make a significant impact on the health of the Kaipara Harbour, ensuring a thriving ecosystem that supports native wildlife and enhances the natural beauty of the region for generations to come.
